Mary M.

Honors Recruitment Officer at Towson University

Class of 2020

Hometown: Severna Park, MD

Major: Speech Language Pathology

What advice would you give a prospective Honors student?

I would tell them to not overwork themselves-- grades aren't everything. This is not to say that you should ignore your schoolwork, but doing your best does not mean running yourself ragged. Looking back on college, there were many times I prioritized my studies over my mental health. My advice would be to know when to say an assignment is good enough and just turn it in. Not everything has to be perfect.

What is your favorite aspect of the Honors community?

My favorite aspect of the Honors community was the sense of having a group on campus. I lived with them, had classes with them, and went to events with them. I was nervous going into a big school like Towson, but the Honors community made it easy to adjust to college.

Why did you choose the Honors College?

I chose the Honors College so that I would be surrounded by like-minded individuals who took school seriously. I also liked that it gave me an automatic group on campus. I was nervous coming into college about making friends and having the Honors College really helped me feel more comfortable. Living in Douglass with the other Honors students made it easy to connect with them and make friends.

What is an academic experience - like a book, project, or research paper - that has had an impact on your life?

My experience in the service learning class (Individuals on the Autism Spectrum) that I took to complete my Honors College Experiential Learning had a big impact on my life. It educated me on important topics for my field, such as ableism, that the classes in my major did not teach me. I made connections with the people at the Hussman center for Adults with Autism and learned things about myself and about disability that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. The class made me view disability and the way society treats people with disability in a whole new light.
